Studies on Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis I . Histopathology of the Nervous System
نویسنده
چکیده
The pathology of the nervous system in equine encephalomyelitis has been described for both the Western (1) and the Eastern (2) forms of the disease. Much attention has been paid to the intranuclear inclusion bodies, found in glial and mesodermal cells as well as in neurones. The intense inflammation, together with the necrosis of nerve cells, has been reported. I t is the purpose of this paper to record in detail the neuropathologic features of the disease in the guinea pig, and to describe the histogenesis of the disease process. Only the nervous system findings are reported. Details of visceral pathology, described by Hurst (2), have been confirmed but no new observations added.

Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus Infection in a Horse from California
A yearling quarter horse, which was raised in southern California, received routine vaccinations for prevention of infection by Eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus (EEEV). One week later, severe neurologic signs developed, and the horse was humanely destroyed. A vaccine-related encephalomyelitis was later suspected. A final diagnosis of EEEV infection was established on the basis of acute on...
متن کاملAlphaviral equine encephalomyelitis (Eastern, Western and Venezuelan).
Summary Alphaviral equine encephalomyelitis is a mosquito-borne infection that causes severe neurological disease and fatalities in horses and humans in the Americas. Consequently, the equine alphaviruses (Eastern, Western and Venezuelan) are of considerable concern worldwide and are notifiable to the World Organisation for Animal Health. In addition, these diseases are considered a potent pote...
متن کاملSTUDIES ON EASTERN EQUINE ENCEPHALOMYELITIS III. INTRAOCULAR INflECTION WITH FIXED VIRUS IN THE GUINEA PIG
In the preceding paper (1) it was shown that a recently isolated strain of equine encephalomyelitis virus, when injected into the eye, sometimes spread along the optic pathways. This type of spread was, however, inconstant. But with a fixed strain of virus (2, 3) an entirely constant behavior was observed which was capable of systematic study. For the study of virus activity within the central ...
متن کاملOcular histopathology in Eastern equine encephalitis: A case report
Purpose To describe the ophthalmic symptoms and histopathological findings in a human case of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). Observations The patient was a septuagenarian male whose presentation and clinical course were thought to be most consistent with viral meningoencephalitis. ELISA suggested recent infection with EEE virus. Microscopic analysis of the brain demonstrated perivascular ...
متن کاملThe Complement Fixation Test in the Diagnosis of Virus Infections of the Central Nervous System
A specific complement fixation test can be obtained in various central nervous system virus infections by using as antigens emulsions of infected brain tissue, freezing and thawing the brain emulsion, and then centrifuging it in an angle head centrifuge at 3500 R.P.M. for 1 hour. The method has proved reliable in the case of rabies, St. Louis encephalitis, Japanese B encephalitis, lymphocytic c...
